Privacy Policy

Browser Notes ("we", "us", or "our") operates the website at browsernotes.xyz and the Browser Notes Chrome extension. This policy explains what information is collected, how it is used, and the choices you have.
Summary
Your notes stay on your device. Browser Notes is local-first. Text notes, sticky boards, and mind maps are stored in your browser (IndexedDB and related local storage). We do not operate a cloud service that stores your note content on our servers.
We use limited third-party analytics on the website to understand usage and improve the product. The Chrome extension requests permissions only to capture content you explicitly save and to support optional new-tab behavior.
Information we do not collect
- We do not require an account, email address, or password to use Browser Notes.
- We do not upload your notes, sticky boards, or mind maps to our servers for storage or sync.
- We do not sell your personal information.
Data stored locally in your browser
When you use Browser Notes on browsernotes.xyz, the following is stored on your device:
- Note content — text notes, sticky notes, mind maps, and board layout data in IndexedDB.
- Preferences — theme choice, view mode, and similar settings in localStorage.
- Backups you create — export files are downloaded to your device; we do not receive them unless you choose to share them elsewhere.
You can delete this data at any time by removing individual notes, clearing site data for browsernotes.xyz in your browser settings, or uninstalling the extension.
Chrome extension
The Browser Notes Chrome extension helps you capture text, images, and page links from other websites into your local Browser Notes workspace. The extension:
- Reads the active tab's title and URL when you save a page or use quick capture.
- Reads text you select or images you right-click, only when you choose a save action.
- May fetch image data from a page when you explicitly save an image, subject to the source site's restrictions.
- Delivers captures to browsernotes.xyz through a content-script bridge so they are saved in your local IndexedDB.
- Stores extension preferences (for example, whether new tabs should open Browser Notes and your last active note or board) in
chrome.storage.
Capture content is not sent to our servers. It is written locally when the Browser Notes tab processes your save request.
Analytics and diagnostics
We use the following services on browsernotes.xyz to understand how the site is used and to improve performance and usability:
- Google Analytics — aggregated usage statistics. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- Microsoft Clarity — session replay and heatmaps to improve the user experience. See Microsoft's Privacy Statement.
These tools may collect information such as pages visited, device type, browser type, general location (derived from IP address), and interaction patterns. They do not receive the contents of your notes.
You can limit analytics through browser privacy settings, ad blockers, or opt-out tools provided by those services.
Cookies and similar technologies
Browser Notes uses local storage technologies required for the app to function (for example, saving your theme and notes). Analytics providers may set their own cookies or similar identifiers when you visit browsernotes.xyz.
Third-party websites
When you capture content from other websites, those sites are governed by their own privacy policies. Browser Notes only processes what you explicitly choose to save.
Children's privacy
Browser Notes is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
International users
Browser Notes is operated from the United States. If you access the service from other regions, your locally stored data remains on your device. Analytics providers may process technical data according to their own policies and infrastructure.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised version on this page and update the "Last updated" date. Continued use of Browser Notes after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
